Microdermabrasion is an effective, non-surgical way to get rid of acne scars, fine wrinkles and sunspots by exfoliating the top layers of the skin. No chemicals or laser beams are used, only aluminum oxide micro crystals that gently sandblast your skin, leaving it smooth and fresh. Micro dermabrasion also stimulates collagen production, helping your skin rejuvenate faster than normal. Also called the lunchtime peel, microderm abrasion takes no more then one hour and requires no downtime.
In 1985, an Italian specialist performed microdermabrasion, as we understand it today, for the first time. Hundreds of people all over the world now treat skin problems with microderm abrasion because it has proved effective but, more importantly, because of its quick post-treatment recovery and low health risk.
Best microdermabrasion candidates are acne prone individuals or those with blotchy skin, fine acne scars, rhytides, enlarged pores, milia or sebaceous hyperplasia. Sun damaged skin or uneven skin tone and texture may also improve as a result of microdermabrasion treatment.
Your technician can give you a rough idea of the number of microdermabrasions required for best results. Major changes are obvious after the fifth session, even though most patients say they observed improvements after the first two. Most doctors suggest 6 to 10 treatments, scheduled around two weeks apart, so the skin has time to recover between micro dermabrasions. After the recommended number of sessions, you may have to schedule another microdermabrasion once every two or three months, to maintain the effects.

Microdermabrasion
Another popular type of peel is 'microdermabrasion' where the top layers of skin are literally sanded off. Over a million Americans booked this treatment last year.
A spray of sterile micro-particles such as fine aluminium oxide, diamond or salt crystals is applied to the skin. The particles and the dead skin are then literally vacuumed out.
This treatment removes the top layer of skin along with:
- blackheads
- whiteheads
- minor lines
- discolorations
- large pores
- scaly textures
The results are similar to a light chemical peel. Four to six treatments are required to achieve the desired result. The repair process also stimulates collagen production and blood flow.
Side effects
Microdermabrasion can cause temporary redness, increased sun sensitivity, dryness of the skin and bruising. However, since the treatment only removes the outer layer of the skin these side effects are rare.
